Insideout Health Magazine
In 2006
Marbella Rehab SL opened it doors to its first clients. The coast now had its own Treatment Centre
specifically opened to help the English speaking expat community who were
having difficulties with alcohol or drug problems.
The
beautiful secluded villa, set in tropical gardens and close to the beach had
formerly been a boutique hotel run by Sharon Knight who herself had suffered
with alcohol dependency. In 1997 Sharon got clean, sober
and into recovery. Well known in her
community, people would begin to talk to her as they knew that she had experienced
her own alcohol problem. Some about their own struggles and some about a loved
ones issues with either alcohol or drugs.
Often she would be asked to “look after” someone at her hotel, someone
who needed a quiet and safe place to recuperate from a particularly bad episode.
In 2005 she
realised that there really was no-where on the coast to help people that needed
Rehab. Although there were two hospitals that would provide a detox from
alcohol, there wasn’t anywhere that treated the cause as to why they were
drinking or using in the first place, so generally they would go out and do it
all again. Hospitals or doctors could
only treat the symptoms, most commonly depression. So it was then that Sharon and her close
friend Gini Wilmshurst, who is also in recovery, decided that they would fill
this gap and open the coasts first centre to deal exclusively with addictions.
Sharon told us “The first step was to deal
with the red tape and get the appropriate licences in order. Then there was the search for the right
professional team to give our clients the very best care possible. It was also of extreme importance to us that
the atmosphere of the centre was right.
We wanted to create a warm, caring, home away from home feeling with
plenty of empathy. Not a cold, clinical,
hospital atmosphere like I experienced when I was doing my research in early
2006 and working voluntarily in various rehabs in the UK”.
The
therapist that joined the team at Marbella Rehab is Roxanne Claude, Ph.D,
ICADC, who trained in the USA,
a highly qualified and experienced psychotherapist who has worked in the field
of addiction for over 15 years. Her demeanour
is outstanding; she has a compassion very rarely seen in therapists with a true
gift for getting to the bottom of clients problems. One client described her as being “like a big
mug of hot chocolate, warm and comforting”.
The next
step was finding a doctor to work with the team, one that was experienced and
understanding of addictions. Marbella
Rehab found Dr Charles Triay MD, a well known and trusted GP on the coast, who
is also extremely knowledgeable on addictions and more importantly how the
addictive mind works.
Heading the
Marbella Rehab team is Gini, in charge of the centre and admissions; she is the
first point of contact with clients and has a perfect mix of professionalism
and compassion.
Support
counselling is supplied by Lynne Adesanya who trained at the Royal Society of
Arts in Chelsea. She also attended the Rutgers University of
Alcohol and Drug Studies in New
Jersey. Lynne
has 18 years experience in the addiction field and worked for the Redcliffe
Project in London
for many years. She facilitates morning
group therapy as well as workshops and general one on one daily care with
clients.
Home cooked
meals are provided by Rani, the Sri-Lankan housekeeper who is there 24/7 and
keeps the centre in tip top condition. Along
with various other friendly staff, the centre has a comforting feel about it
and people settle in very quickly, feeling safe, secure and protected.
One thing
that seems to be most important to people seeking help for a drink or drug
problem is confidentiality. It is a very
delicate subject and not one that people like to discuss or admit to as it seems
to have a stigma attached to it. Anyone
that contacts Marbella Rehab is assured of the strictest confidence.
The
treatment plan at Marbella Rehab has been devised to treat the mind, body and
spirit. Mornings comprise of one-on-one
therapy, group therapy, educational dvd’s and workshops. Afternoons comprise of relapse prevention
talks, spa visits, yoga or art therapy and at the end of the day there is a
relaxing beach walk to cleanse the mind.
People who
come to Marbella Rehab talk of hope, something that so many of them didn’t have
before they came into treatment. They
begin to believe that they can recover and begin a new way of life; that this
time away from their usual environment can help to break the habits and vicious
cycles that are so easy to fall into.
The family are also given care and attention as the loved ones also suffer,
sometimes more than the alcohol or drug abuser.
Marbella
Rehab can be contacted on (+34) 952 78 4228, where you can speak to Gini and
have a confidential, no-obligation chat.

The Smart Gambler
When a Flutter Becomes a Hurricane' by Andy Allen
We
all like a flutter – it adds spice to a horse-race, piquancy to a
football match. It gives a charge of adrenalin, causes the heart, yes,
to flutter. Good God, it’s an innocent enough pastime.
And so
it is. Except for those unfortunate few for whom the flutter has become
a hurricane – a Katrina, tearing through their lives, destroying the
lives too of their families, their friends. Compulsive gambling is now
recognised as an addiction – as much of one as addiction, say, to
drugs. Often it has more devastating effects. And it is just as hard a
habit to break. Well, if you have a problem, or think you might have –
or think you might know someone who has – finally there is help here
locally on the coast. The Marbella Rehab has recently opened.
Professionally staffed and licensed, its aim is to supply a
comfortable, safe and affordable environment in which the compulsive
gambler (or those with problems around drink, drugs or sex) can start
to piece his or her life back together again.
Absolute confidentiality is assured. For further information, please contact, Marbella Rehab email info@marbellarehab.com
