MINNESOTA MODEL

KEY ELEMENTS

  • The integration of professional staff with trained recovering alcoholics/addicts.
  • The focus on the disease concept and link to the 12-Step fellowships.
  • The dedication to family involvement.
  • The insistence on abstinence from the use of all drugs causing addiction.
  • The emphasis on patient and family education.
  • An individualised treatment plan.
  • A continuum of care integrating sustained aftercare into all treatment plans.

12 Step Programme

The 12 Step Programme is a tried and tested method for long term alcoholism and drug addiction recovery. Used by the Alcoholics Anonymous organisation for around 70 years, it is a simple but effective treatment, using a set of 12 steps for living life in a simpler and more rewarding way.

The basis of the programme is acceptance, letting go of the past and dealing with problems as they arise together with a continued self awareness, not only of negative behaviours but also of the positive successes achieved in each day.

Alcoholics Anonymous is the world's biggest union of self-help groups concerned with alcohol abuse.

The therapy in these groups takes place without the interference of public bodies, doctors, psychologists or other professionals.

The only requirement is an honest desire to quit drinking or drug taking. At AA/NA meetings you will meet people who have been through the same hardships as yourself.

Alcoholism and drug addiction is surrounded by myth and judgmental thinking. Alcoholics or addicts are considered to be weak and self indulgent, with no self control. The fact is that alcoholism and addiction is an illness – both physical and psychological – and no one has a choice about whether or not they become alcoholic or an addict.

Detox

Detox is a specialised field. This can be done as a home detox with your own doctor or our qualified English speaking Doctor can help arrange for you to be detox here in our centre on in more serious cases in a nearby medial facility.
